Is Made to order a good thing? Goodbye Skaven

Made to Order Skaven. The time has come to say goodbye to some of the classic models.  It is now their turn to have their last hurrah in the GW Made to Order week.  Hot on the heels of the Skaven battletome release you have one final chance to pickup some of the old stalwarts of the roster.  The remnants of the rich world that was will include Thanquol and Boneripper, Deathmaster Snikch, Queek Headtaker, Ikit Claw, and a Grey Seer.  It looks like they are all metal variants, which I would argue is a good thing.  Working with finecast has made me nostalgic for metal, and working with metal has made me really appreciate plastics.

Made to Order: Pros and Cons

Made to order is great for both the collector and GW.  The downside is that the price tends to jump up, which is a little sneaky.  The good part though is that you have some notice that it will be discontinued.  In the past I’ve been caught out thinking of buying a model for a long time only to suddenly find it vanishes.  It’s no longer available and you end up having to trawl ebay in the hopes of finding one in decent nick.  So ultimately, I would say it’s a great addition to the GW service/plan.  They turn it into some clever marketing while bumping up the price, in addition to creating desire with a deadline.  The consumer/collector will have notice of how long it is available and probably want it more because it is the last chance.  So we get played and manipulated a little, but we don’t mind too much.

In a way it can be a little sad, especially for the older hobbyists among us that remember the models in common use (and maybe even on release!).  However, with the constant stream of new and updated models the popularity of the older ones drops.  Understandable when you look at the quality of the newer ones, and space has to be made on the shelf somehow.

The Skaven Models

As for the Skaven available, it has to be some of the best we’ve seen in made to order.  For such old models the quality is excellent and they are very interesting to look at despite relatively static poses.  Every now and again you see the post and there a few duffers that you can’t imagine anyone being interested in.  Skaven are a faction that became interesting to me after picking up Island of Blood on my return to the hobby, just before the world blew up…..There is plenty to talk about in the regard, but that is for another day.

Ultimately, for a Skaven fan this is a good batch of models, clearly very old but full of character as Skaven often are.  Made to order is overall a great idea.  I like to think of it as an honourable mention to great models before their time is over.

What do you think?  Cheeky marketing or a great service to the fans?
